This simple but effective drum from India is made from mango wood and produces a resonant percussive tone. The damru drum would have originally been used by street vendors to attract customers to their stalls.

The drum features a brightly coloured, striped exterior with rope tuning and rope arms with a singular bead attached that strike the drum skin when shaken. Damru (sometimes spelt Damaru) also have a religious connection in Hinduism and Shiva is often seen holding one in dancing form.

How to play

To play, hold the drum in the middle and rotate or ‘shake’ rhythmically to force the beads on the rope arms to strike the drum skin. The faster you rotate the drum, the more intense the sound will become.
