The Howarth S20C is an intermediate-level conservatoire system oboe designed specifically for the developing student. An ideal upgrade from the Howarth Junior Conservatoire or Junior PLUS+ models, the S20C offers enhanced playability and keywork features while remaining significantly lighter than professional instruments, making it especially suitable for younger players or those with smaller hands.
Crafted from high-quality Grenadilla wood (also know as African Blackwood), the S20C features fully covered hole keywork for easier handling and improved comfort. With keywork based on the full conservatoire (French) system, the S20C supports confident, expressive playing up to and beyond grade 8 standard.
This model includes semi-automatic octaves and a 3rd octave key, along with left and right-hand C-D trill keys, a C-C# trill key, forked F vent, low Bb vent and left hand F key, all features that help facilitate advanced repertoire and technical development. Silver-plated keys and precision-adjusting screws complete the durable, high-performance design.
Howarth are the very definition of a specialist manufacturer. They have been continually in existence since 1948 although the name Howarth has been associated with woodwind manufacture since the 1870s. They are, today, considered to be one of the finest bespoke manufacturers of oboes, oboes d'amore and English horns and their instruments are all extremely high quality. Their student models are justifiably well regarded and are popular throughout the education sector.
Thumplate oboes are widely used in the UK as starting instruments. They feature simplified keywork and a narrower bore to make them more accessible for younger players. Dual system oboes have more advanced keywork and generally a bigger bore, and are intended for players of a higher standard doing solo or orchestral work. Conservatoire system oboes are mainly found in Continental Europe and the US, and have a different fingering technique altogether which is also intended for more advanced players.
